  7.     U.S., British and French military men couldn't wait to paw
  8. over some of the Soviet-supplied Iraqi tanks littering the
  9. Kuwaiti desert. They expected the abandoned armor to be a boon
  10. for battlefield training and analysis. But many tanks were
  11. reduced to smoldering hulks by guided missiles. Others, taken
  12. out by A-10 attack planes, at first appear to be in good
  13. condition, until survey crews discover a small hole in their
  14. exteriors. That hole indicates that shrapnel produced by
  15. armor-piercing shells has destroyed everything inside. Although
  16. the allies captured thousands of Iraqi tanks, the Americans
  17. have found just five reasonably intact specimens of the T-72,
  18. the top Soviet model.
